In Mohs micrographic surgery scars, interrupted and continuous 5-0 nylon sutures had equivalent cosmetic results.

A total of 101 patients were randomized to have half their scar sutured with interrupted 5-0 nylon stitches and the other half with running 5-0 nylon stitches.

The principal investigator assessed each scar half at 1 week, 8 weeks and 6 months. A plastic surgeon and general dermatologist completed blinded photo evaluations at 1 week and 6 weeks.

Researchers found no significant difference in scar outcome according to three different scar assessment scales, at any time point, nor for any assessor (blinded or otherwise).

The researchers stated that as running sutures are cost-0 effective and time-saving, they may be a more preferred closure technique for facial skin repair. – by Abigail Sutton
