AAFPRS: 87% of facial plastic surgeons performed reconstruction after skin cancer

The nose is the most common facial site for skin cancer reconstruction, followed by the cheeks, ears and the forehead, according to the annual survey from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

In 2014, skin cancer and Mohs surgery were the second most common reconstructive techniques performed by facial plastic surgeons in 2014. According to the press release one in five skin cancers are treated with Mohs technique, especially on facial areas.

One in five Americans develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and around 80% of the cancers occur on the face and can be very disfiguring, according to the AAFPRS.

Facial plastic surgeons see many of these types of patients as they possess knowledge and understanding of the facial structures which aids in aesthetically pleasing results after skin cancer removal, Stephen S. Park, MD, FACS, AAFPRS president said in the release.
