AAFPRS: 'All people must be treated with respect and dignity’
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery issued a press release on facial feminization surgery for transgender individuals, stating that “like all people, transgender individuals must be treated with respect and dignity.”
The release stated that there are around 700,000 transgender individuals in the US, according to The Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law.
Surgery that includes either facial feminization or masculinization procedures may be a part of the process for some people.
The surgeries include hairline advancement and reshaping, brow bone shaping (or frontal cranioplasty), eyebrow lifting, rhinoplasty, cheek augmentation, chin and jaw shaping (mandibuloplasty), lip lift and augmentation, Adam’s apple reduction (or tracheal shave surgery), and anti-aging procedures such as facelift and eyelift.
The AAFPRS provides educational opportunities for physicians learning how to properly care for transgender individuals and urges patients to select board-certified surgeons who specialize in facial plastic surgery.
