Researchers created a baseline for lower eyelid measurements which can be helpful in restoring a more youthful lid, as part of a comprehensive approach to managing the aging eye.

Twenty female patients in every decade participated starting at the 20 to 29 year olds and going through 90 to 99 year olds.

The lid length average was 10.4 mm in the 20s decade and increased to 18.6 mm for those in their 90s.

Researchers found an almost linear increase in lower lid length with the greatest increase in the 40 to 49 year olds.

This parallels with the greater demand in lower lid blepharoplasty in the fourth decade of life.

The researchers wrote that measuring the lower lid is a simple task and can be done with a small, flexible ruler.

The lower lid measurement should be noted in lower lid blepharoplasty, along with other variables like lower lid tone, muscle, skin tone and texture, negative vector and fat distribution, for example. – by Abigail Sutton
