Researchers help quantify vertical position of the malar prominence and determine its consistency by using the value based Golden Ratio.
Researchers sought to evaluate the vertical location of the malar prominence with respect to facial landmarks (chin and eye) in a large group of subjects and to determine whether the location of the feature was consistent among individuals.
Out of 67 patients being evaluated for rhinoplasty there were 35 males and 32 females with most ages ranging from 16 to 69 years.
Pupil center coordinates, lateral canthi, commissures of the mouth, the menton and the malar prominence were recorded.
Average ratio of cheek height to canthus height was 0.793.
The average ratio of cheek height to pupil height was found to be 0.777.
Cheek height in males was found to be 0.794 and 0.793 for females, which were similar.
No difference among age groups was found for malar prominences.
Researchers added that images do not need to be direct frontal views, a frontal to an almost profile can be used providing the facial landmarks can be determined. – by Abigail Sutton
