Vertical vector deep-plane facelift improves midfacial volume

Researchers determined that on average, 3.2 mL of volume augmentation is achieved in each hemi-midface after vertical vector deep-plane rhytidectomy, as determined by 3-D imaging software.

Forty-three patients underwent a primary deep-plane vertical vector rhytidectomy, with a mean patient age of 61 years.

Researchers measured volume with 3-D imaging preoperatively and postoperatively using the Vectra camera and analysis software (Canfield Scientific Inc.).

The volumetric changes were measured in the midface region, which included the area inside the perimeter of the inferior orbital rim, the nasolabial fold and the anterior and lateral cheeks.

Mean time to postoperative imaging was 23 months.

The mean volume gained in each hemi-midface after deep-plane facelift was 3.2 mL.

The differences in volume between the right and left hemifaces was only 0.2 mL, and the sides remained fairly symmetrical.

For patients aged 55 years and younger, the mean volume gained on each side was 3.9 mL. For those older than 55 years, 2.9 mL was gained.

The age difference numbers did not reach statistical significance, but the researchers suggest this difference may represent a trend in which younger patients have a larger amount of volume restoration than older patients. – by Abigail Sutton
