Fat administered with superficial enhanced fluid fat injection by small side-port cannulae treats age-related lipoatrophy, reduces facial wrinkles and improves skin quality, according to data published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal.
The technique uses “micro” side-port cannulae to harvest “micro” fat. The harvest fat contains many stem cells and viable adipocytes, according to researchers. The fat is enhanced and made fluid with addition of autologous platelet-rich plasma and injected superficially.
The researchers named the technique “superficial enhanced fluid fat injection” (SEFFI).
Ninety-eight patients, mean age of 51 years, underwent SEFFI, which was performed concurrently with other procedures including minimal-incisions vertical endoscopic lift, necklift and primary or revisional blepharoplasty.
The average volume of implanted fat was 71.4 mL.
Pretreatment and posttreatment photographs were taken to provide an objective clinical assessment.
The two senior authors rated the results independently and “good” in 63% or 62 patients and “excellent” in 37% or 36 patients.
All complications were minor and only occurred in four patients.
The researchers concluded that SEFFI is well-tolerated and effective in improving volume loss and skin quality throughout the face, including the periocular and perioral regions. – by Abigail Sutton
