Sebacia announces Series C financing for advancement of acne treatment
Sebacia announced completion of a $22 million Series C financing, which the company plans to use the proceeds to advance its in-office procedure for severe acne, according to a press release.
In financing including $12 million in equity from existing investors and $10 million in a credit facility from Square 1 Bank, Sebacia plans to complete a U.S. clinical trial and the application with the FDA to register the Sebacia Treatment as an approved medical device, the release stated. The company also plans to expand its intellectual property portfolio and to prepare for manufacturing to support the product’s launch in Europe and the United States.
The Sebacia Treatment is intended to reduce acne during a few treatments performed at a dermatologist’s office, according to the release. The treatment uses proprietary Sebacia microparticles, which are made of gold and silica placed in a suspension designed to penetrate the sebaceous follicles when activated by the light lasers commonly used for hair removal. The treatment demonstrated efficacy in two published clinical studies in March 2015 the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, according to the release.
“If approved, the Sebacia Treatment would be the first procedure performed by a dermatologist that is intended to provide relief from acne without use of daily pills, lotions and creams,” Anthony Lando, chief executive officer of Sebacia, said in the release. “Our clinical data so far has shown that the Sebacia Treatment can deliver a robust and significant reduction in acne, which we believe will have tremendous benefit to the many who struggle for years with the condition.”
Sebacia also announced the appointment of Pedro Medrano as vice president, Engineering and Program Management. Medrano has more than 20 years of experience in medical device product development and commercialization. Medrano will be in charge of commercialization readiness for Sebacia Treatment, the release stated.
