Via a survey of U.K. plastic surgeons, researchers found the median implant size commonly used in primary breast augmentation was 300 cc and preoperative external sizers were the most common technique to selected implant size for breast augmentation.

Out of 164 surgeons who responded — from a total of 359 who were sent the survey — 95% performed some form of preoperative assessment. The remaining 5% relied on “experience only.”

External sizers are used by 119 surgeons (74%) for preoperative assessment. Preoperative measurements were used by 57% of respondents and 3% used intraoperative sizers only.

A combination of measurements was used by 34% of surgeons.

For those who use preoperative measurements, breast base was the most common measurement, followed by tissue assessment and breast height.

The researchers concluded that more than one-third of surgeons use a combined, balanced approach utilizing measurements along with volumetric external sizing to assess breast augmentation. – by Abigail Sutton
