More males dissatisfied with rhinoplasty, have trouble verbalizing reason

Males have lower satisfaction in rhinoplasty and are vaguer in expressing reasons for dissatisfaction than females, according study results in Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

Researchers analyzed 2,326 patient rhinoplasty reviews on RealSelf.com. Significantly more females were satisfied: 87.6% vs. 56.1% of males.

In females, reasons for satisfaction were more often due to their nose being smaller than prior to surgery. Males were more often satisfied because they felt the surgeon listened to them.

Among the reasons for dissatisfaction for males, a residual dorsal hump, an under-rotated tip and a nose that was too small were the most popular.

Females most often complained of a residual dorsal hump, an under-rotated tip and a bulbous tip.

Among dissatisfied patients, significantly more females were able to verbalize their reason for dissatisfaction. In general, females were more often concerned with the overall shape of their nose as a reason for dissatisfaction, such as the rhinoplasty leaving their nose too large, too small or too wide.

The researchers concluded that these findings highlight the importance of proper informed consent and expectation management when planning a rhinoplasty. – by Abigail Sutton
