The National Psoriasis Foundation announced it has received a second year of funding from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute for its patient-centered research, according to a press release.
The National Psoriasis Foundation uses an interactive online community called Citizen Pscientist to allow patients with psoriatic disease to report disease-related data on triggers, treatments, associated health conditions and more; compare patient-shared data; and conduct analysis through visualization tools, the release stated.
“As the world’s largest organization serving people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, our mission to drive efforts to cure psoriatic disease and improve the lives of those affected centers on the engagement of patients in the research process,” Michael Siegel, PhD, director of research programs, National Psoriasis Foundation, said in the release. “Citizen Pscientist allows our organization to bring patients to the table and help us determine our research agenda by letting patients be the subject and the scientist. This input will help shape the course of research into these conditions.”
The funding will allow the National Psoriasis Foundation to build on the initial Patient Center Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) contract to gather patient perspective from Citizen Pscientist participants on the most effective treatments for psoriatic disease. The platform connects patients with psoriatic disease researchers, who serve as advisers, according to the release.
PCORI, an independent, nonprofit organization, was authorized by Congress in 2010 to fund comparative effective research, according to the release. The project funding was administered on behalf of PCORI by Colorado Foundation for Public Health and Environment, the release stated. The National Psoriasis Foundation is a nonprofit serving people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
