Dermatologist Amy S. Paller, MD, among five named to NIAMS advisory council

Amy S. Paller, MD, the Walter J. Hamlin professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, is one of five new members appointed to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases advisory council.

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Skin Diseases (NIAMS), part of the NIH, comprises scientific and lay members who have experience in the institute’s mission areas and provide advice on policy issues and make recommendations on research proposals, according to an NIH press release. NIAMS’ mission is “to support research into the causes, treatment and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases, the training of … scientists to carry out the research; and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases,” the release stated.

Paller, a pediatric dermatologist, specializes in clinical research related to genetic and immune-mediated inflammatory conditions in children, focusing on eczema, psoriasis, localized scleroderma and epidermolysis bullosa, the release stated.

Other new members of the advisory council are:

  • Joan E. Bechtold, PhD, the Gustilo professor of orthopedic research and graduate professor in Orthopedic Surgery and Mechanical Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis;
  • W. Michael Holers, MD, Scoville professor of rheumatology and head of the Division of Rheumatology, University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora;
  • Sundeep Khosia, MD, Dr. Francis Chucker and Nathan Landow research professor, Mayo Foundation Distinguished Investigator and dean for clinical and translational science at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minn.;
  • Richard F. Sieden, JD, partner with Foley and Lardner, LLP, Los Angeles. Sieden has been a member of the California Bar since 1973, according to the release.
