When compared to the single injection group, those who received two injections of botulinum toxin type A experienced greater reductions in volume and thickness of the lower face, according to data published in Dermatologic Surgery.
Researchers in South Korea studied 20 volunteers randomly assigned to two groups. Group one included 10 volunteers, four men and six women, who received a single BTX-A injection.
Group two included 10 volunteers, two men and eight women, who received two BTX-A treatments. The second was administered four months after the first.
Researchers used a 3D laser scanner (Vivid 9i; Minolta, Tokyo, Japan) to assess post-injection changes to the face.
The 3D images prior to injection were superimposed over the images post-injection.
Six months after the first injection, the volume and thickness of the lower face was significantly reduced compared with before the first injection, with the greatest changes in group two.
In group one, the volume decreased from 43,861 mm3 to 42,675 mm3 and the thickness decreased by 1.52 mm. In group two, the volume decreased from 41,618 mm3 to 37,546 mm3 and the thickness decreased by 3.84 mm.-by Abigail Sutton
