Researchers determine reliable method is needed to measure rosacea severity
Assessment methodologies used in clinical trials for rosacea treatment varied, demonstrating the need for a reliable assessment method, according to researchers.
The researchers conducted literature searches of PubMed and Medline for clinical trials of rosacea published between Jan. 1, 1985, and Jan. 31, 2014. Keywords searched included “rosacea,” “clinical,” “trial,” “clinical trial” and “clinical trial as topic.”
Thirty-two studies met criteria of a specific sign or symptom of rosacea being assessed, except for one trial that used clinical global assessment. The most frequently assessed sign was erythema, followed by papules and pustules, and telangiectasia, with visual assessment by clinician being the primary modality of assessment in all 32 studies. The most frequently used scale for rating the degree of severity was a four-point scale.
Assessment methods of symptoms, severity, and global severity were variable; three trials used the standardized assessment methodologies, according to the researchers.
The researchers concluded the assessment of novel treatment of rosacea is difficult using the diverse methodologies described in the trials, and valid, reliable and easy-to-use assessment tools are needed to improve rosacea management. – by Bruce Thiel
