U.S. Marshals seized unapproved prescription drug products valued at more than $1.5 million from Stratus Pharmaceuticals in Miami, according to a press release from the FDA.
The action was performed at the request of the FDA and the U.S. Attorney for Southern District of Florida, according to the release. The products were manufactured by Sonar Products of Carlstadt, N.J., and marketed and distributed by Stratus Pharmaceuticals.
A solution for excessive sweating; antibiotic cleanser for treatment of skin conditions including acne, rosacea and seborrhea; a topical ointment for wound treatment; topical gel for psoriasis, eczema and other skin condition; and analgesic ear drops for ear pain were among the products seized, the release reported.
“Companies that market unapproved drugs are placing consumers at risk because the products may not be safe, effective or made using quality manufacturing practices,” Cynthia Schnedar, director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in the release.
The FDA has recommended to consumers who believe they have drugs marketed by Stratus Pharmaceuticals to consult a health professional or pharmacists about discontinuing use of the products and finding an alternative treatment.
