FACE-Q scales quantify change for resurfacing, injectable patients
SAN FRANCISCO — Researchers found that a new patient-reported outcome instrument, the FACE-Q scales, helped effectively quantify meaningful change among patients who underwent laser resurfacing, neurotoxin and injectable filler procedures, according to data presented at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting.
Patients included in the study were asked to complete the FACE-Q scales of Satisfaction with Facial Appearance, Satisfaction with Skin, Appraisal of Facial Lines and Social Function both before and after their cosmetic procedures. The researchers compared overall Rasch transformed scores using paired t-tests and used a subgroup analysis for the injectable group (neurotoxins, fillers) and the laser-resurfacing group to compare changes in FACE-Q scores.
A total of 32 patients completed the scales 41 times (24 pre-procedure patients, 17 post-procedure patients). Of the patients included in the final study, 48.8% received injectable treatment, 43.9% underwent skin resurfacing, 2.4% underwent both and 4.9% underwent eyelash treatment.
The researchers found Satisfaction with Facial Appearance scores increased from 48.4 before the procedure to 73.4 after the procedure. Satisfaction with Facial Skin scores increased from 43.7 to 66.9, and Appraisal of Facial Lines scores increased from 55.2 to 66.8.
According to the researchers, the findings objectively quantified meaningful change among patients undergoing nonsurgical facial cosmetic procedures. — by Abigail Sutton
