Healio.com/Dermatology will provide coverage of the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in San Francisco beginning Friday.

“A key issue for the academy is the future of dermatology and how dermatologists can continue to offer quality patient care,” Joan Guitart, MD, FAAD, chair of the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) Scientific Assembly Committee, told Healio.com/Dermatology. “With the Affordable Care Act now in effect, and with dermatology undergoing major changes, the talks on health care reform, especially during the Hot Topics Symposium and plenary session, should be of great interest to the attendees.”

The 5-day meeting has nearly 17,000 registrants, which is expected to increase with onsite registration, according to an AAD representative.

Additionally, the meeting will feature more than 350 educational sessions, according to an AAD press release.

“The academy has increased the number of late-breaking research sessions with the intention of highlighting cutting-edge areas of research and expanding the academy’s educational mission of promoting new discoveries and trends in dermatology,” Guitart said. “These five new sessions will focus on different fields of interest ranging from basic science to therapeutics, cosmetics and dermatologic surgery.”

The Hot Topics Symposium will cover subjects that meeting attendees have identified to be the most interesting and relevant, the release stated.

Plenary session speakers on Sunday will include Deputy Surgeon General Rear Adm. Boris Lushniak, MD, MPH, who will discuss dermatologists’ role in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, according to the release. Lushniak served as acting Surgeon General from 2013 to December 2014 and issued a Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer in July 2014.

Other plenary speakers include American Medical Association president-elect, Steven J. Stack, MD, and Johnny Bench, who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
