In the February edition of the president’s newsletter, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery president, Michael J. Will, MD, DDS, FACS, said the AACS is returning to its roots as the premier organization for cosmetic surgery training and education. He also announced the reinstatement of fellowship opportunities for members and new workshops throughout the year.

Will thanked membership for the feedback received from the AACS Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans and stated that the suggested improvements will be made for the next meeting in Hollywood, Fla., led by Bob Shumway, MD, and the annual meeting committee.

In the letter, Will also expressed his gratitude for 2014 president, Jane Petro, MD, “for her wisdom and leadership through a very difficult transition year at the Academy.”

Annual Meeting speakers and educational session leaders Ryan Greene, MD; Suzan Obagi, MD; Sabrina Fabi, MD; Bob Shumway, MD; Marc Cohen, MD; Julie Woodward, MD; Marco Pelosi III, MD; Marco Barcuso, MD; Chad Deal, MD; Elie Ferneini, MD; and Jennifer Deal were mentioned for their tireless efforts and outstanding sessions at the meeting.

Will announced that three new workshops are now open for registration:

  • The art for fat grafting for facial rejuvenation and body contouring: May 15-17, with Carey Nease, MD, and Chad Deal, MD; Chattanooga, Tenn.;
  • Enhanced facial rejuvenation: June 12-13, with Angela Cuzalina, DDS, and Joe Niamtu III, DMD; Tulsa, Okla.; and
  • Liposuction, fat grafting and new lipoabdominoplasty techniques: Oct. 16-17, with Marco Pelosi II, MD and Marco Pelosi III, MD; Bayonne, NJ.

The president’s newsletter also announced that in addition to the AACS’ reinstatement of facial cosmetic surgery fellowship training, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery has created a certifying exam for facial cosmetic surgeons who wish to challenge the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery. Members who might be interested in starting a facial cosmetic surgery fellowship accredited by the AACS were encouraged to contact Margaret Bengtson at AACS headquarters. The AACS facial fellowship committee chairman is Faisal Quereshy, MD.

A general cosmetic surgery fellowship that includes facial, body, breast, extremity and dermatologic surgery is also desired, and any member with an interest in creating such a program should contact Bengtson or Quereshy, according to the letter.

“I am very excited about the direction the Academy is taking and encourage any members interested in serving on committees or assuming leadership positions to help steer the organization to contact me or any of the board of trustees, and we can make it happen,” Will wrote. – by Abigail Sutton
