ASPS: Reconstructive surgery, minimally-invasive procedures up 3% from 2013

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has released its annual plastic surgery procedural statistics, which reported 15.6 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2014, representing a 3% increase from 2013.

The procedural statistics are compiled from member-reported data to Tracking Operations and Outcome for Plastic Surgeons (TOPS), combined with results from an annual survey sent to American Board of Medical Specialties’ certified physicians most likely to perform these procedures, according to an American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) press release.

The ASPS reported 5.8 million reconstructive surgery procedures were performed in 2014, up 1% from the year prior.

Additionally, the use of fat in minimally invasive procedures was up 2% from 2013 to 2014, according to the press release.

Buttock implants and lifts were among the fastest-growing procedures during the past year, with fat-grafting procedures up 15% from 2013; buttock implants increased by 98%, and buttock lifts increased 44% during the same period.

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were also reported to be on the rise, with an increase of 4% to more than 13.9 million procedures reported in 2014. Botulinum toxin type A, soft-tissue fillers and chemical peels rounded-out the top three treatments.

Cosmetic surgical procedures grew more modestly with a 1% increase, according to the release.

The ASPS also reported a rise in male plastic surgery. Pectoral implants and male breast reductions were among the most popular male-focused procedures.
