3-D superficial liposuction can provide satisfying outcomes with proper technique
Results of a retrospective review demonstrated 3-D superficial liposuction of the hip, thighs and trunk, when performed correctly, was effective in providing satisfying outcomes, with excellent contour and enhanced skin retraction.
Researchers reviewed the charts of 4,000 patients who underwent superficial liposuction within the researchers’ 20 years of experience with various liposuction procedures. Long-term results such as body contouring and skin retraction were maintained, even among patients who had pregnancies (9%) or experienced weight losses or increases (37%) after surgery, according to the researchers.
Complications were experienced in 2% of patients and included one major case of mycobacterial infection, 20 minor asymmetries that were corrected 6 months later under local anesthesia, 18 minor skin irregularities improved after lipofilling, six cases of transient hyperpigmentation of the skin, two cases of transient paresthesia and 50 cases of seroma, which were resolved after several weekly syringe aspirations.
The researchers attributed the contour benefits of this procedure to the thin cutaneous adipose flap. Additionally, they recommended careful surgical planning, a thorough preoperative explanation of realistic expectations with the patient and diligent postoperative care to achieve the best results. – by Abigail Sutton
