American Board of Cosmetic Surgery responds to NewBeauty article

The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery recently published an open letter in response to an article in NewBeauty magazine reported to be misleading to the reader.

The infographic, “Not all doctors are the same,” was published with the stated purpose of helping patients interested in cosmetic surgery make safe choices; however, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) found the magazine published factual inaccuracies that were favorable to its advertisers, according to a press release.

The ABCS’ letter aimed to dispel myths existing around board certification as it relates to the specialty of cosmetic surgery, the release stated.

Committed to providing excellence in patient care and safety, the ABCS stated that it is the only certifying board to formally require comprehensive cosmetic surgery fellowship training. By neglecting to define the difference between physicians operating outside of their specialty training and surgeons who have specialized training in cosmetic surgery through a fellowship and examination process, the article creates confusion among consumers, according to the release.

“For a cosmetic-focused publication to state that only plastic surgeons are qualified to perform cosmetic surgery procedures is inaccurate,” Samir Pancholi, DO, president of the ABCS, stated in the open letter. “NewBeauty is endangering the public by suggesting they indiscriminately choose a board-certified plastic surgeon, when the truth is, the traditional path to board certification in plastic surgery doesn’t require cosmetic surgery training.”
