Recent developments involving aesthetic dermatology included the FDA’s approval of Suneva’s Bellafill for treating acne scars and the release of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery’s guidelines on sclerotherapy.

1. FDA approves Suneva's Bellafill dermal filler for treatment of acne scars
Suneva Medical announced that the FDA has approved its dermal filler, Bellafill, for treating acne scars.

Bellafill is designed to add volume to the skin to smooth out pitted acne scars through an in-office injection procedure with little-to-no downtime, according to a company press release.
“In the dermatology field, we regularly see patients who live with the burden of acne scarring,” investigator Ava Shamban, MD, said in the release. “I look forward to using this proven treatment option with patients.” Read more
2. Actavis, Allergan announce SEC declaration, shareholder meetings on pending acquisition
Actavis and Allergan announced that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has declared Actavis’ registration statement on Form S-4 with regard to Actavis’ pending acquisition of Allergan to be effective.
The two companies also announced in a press release that they have scheduled special shareholder meetings on March 10 in connection with the pending acquisition. Read more

Preventable measures may help decrease delayed reactions and biofilm formation after dermal filler injection, according to findings from a literature review.

4. OnabotulinumtoxinA effective in treating crow's feet lines, glabellar lines

6. FDA approves phase 3 study protocol for Evosyal
Alphaeon Corporation announced that the FDA has approved the protocol for its phase 3 clinical study of Evosyal for the treatment of glabella lines.
The company acquired exclusive U.S. and certain international distribution rights for Evosyal (botulinum toxin Type A neuromodulator) through its acquisition of Evolus. Read more
7. Changing pH in botulinum toxin Type B reduced injection pain
By changing the pH level in the acidic solution of botulinum toxin Type B, injection pain was reduced and efficacy was not compromised, according to study results.
Researchers used reviewed clinical evaluation data and computer analysis of photographs to confirm the efficacy of different dilutions of botulinum toxin Type Band to confirm botulinum toxin Type A resistance in a series of three patients. Read more

Galderma announced the launch of its FDA-approved filler, Restylane Silk, which is indicated for lip enhancement and for the treatment of wrinkles around the mouth in patients 21 years and older.
