According to the results of an annual survey by the American Academy of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, 13% of facial plastic surgeons surveyed saw an increase in requests for celebrity procedures in 2014, up from 3% in 2013 and 7% in 2012, according to a press release.
Angelina Jolie’s lips and cheekbones came in first, followed by Beyoncé’s facial structure, Kim Kardashian’s eye and jawline, Brad Pitt’s nose and Natalie Portman’s nose as the most popular celebrity features patients wanted to emulate.
President of the American Academy of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, Stephen S. Park, MD, FACS, reminded patients that changing one’s appearance will not give that person the same level of celebrity recognition. Additionally, many celebrity photos are retouched, which can result in unrealistic expectations, he said in the release.
Survey results also demonstrated that the incidence of skin cancer continues to grow, especially in younger people. As such, 87% of facial plastic surgeons surveyed reported having seen patients for reconstructive work related to skin cancer.
The nose was the most common site on the face for skin cancer facial reconstruction, followed by the cheeks, ears and forehead, according to the release.
The survey showed women continue to seek the majority of facial plastic surgery, accounting for 82% of all surgical and non-surgical procedures in 2014. The most common non-surgical cosmetic procedures among women are Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA, Allergan), Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA, Galderma) and Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA, Merz) injections, according to the release.
