Circumferential arm liposuction an option for creating 'celebrity arms'
NEW ORLEANS — An interactive liposuction method can help create the look of toned “celebrity arms,” according to a speaker here.
Thomas Y. Su, MD, discussed his technique and results during a presentation at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Annual Scientific Meeting.
Patients are often looking for a slimmer and toned upper arm with a well-defined bicep, triceps and deltoid, according to Su. Traditional liposuction and brachioplasty cannot achieve the celebrity arm look, and often diet and exercise are not enough, he said.
The interactive approach allows Su to check the patient in dynamic positions. He has the patient turn their arm, raise their arm and flex in various positions to see whether certain areas need further sculpting while he performs the liposuction.
Su uses up to 10 positions with each patient and is constantly coming up with additional poses and positions to work various muscles and find the patient’s unique muscular size and placement.
Results are commonly seen in around 2 weeks, he said.
Approximately 300 cc to 500 cc of fat is taken, on average, from each arm on which Su works. The scarring produced is minimal, and although hyperpigmentation is possible, it fades over time, he said.
After many years of experience with this surgery, Su said he can now complete the liposuction procedure on both arms in 3 hours, with approximately 1 hour of surgery preparation time.
Even for patients who work out regularly and follow a strict diet, achieving toned upper arms can be a challenge. Circumferential interactive liposuction is an option for those patients, according to Su. – by Abigail Sutton
