Gary D. Monheit, MD, receives top ASDS award

Gary D. Monheit, MD, was presented with the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery’s highest honor, the Samuel J. Stegman, MD, Award for Distinguished Service, on Dec. 19, 2014, according to a press release from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

The ASDS tribute recognizes members who make a significant impact in advancing ASDS goals in education, organized service and/or research.

Monheit has been an ASDS member for decades and even attended the very first ASDS meeting in December 1970, before he had even become a resident, according to the release. He later received the first ASDS Resident Scholarship.

Other accomplishments include having received Mohs surgery training with Frederic E. Mohs, MD, himself.

Monheit has chaired various work groups, trained two generations of fellows, helped in testing for the FDA and has traveled to mentor as well as aid as a legislative liaison, according to the release. He is currently working with his third generation of young dermatologic surgeons, accumulating more than 25 years of training fellows.

The ASDS recognizes that Monheit remains committed to excellence and to training future leaders.
