The combination of intralesional cryosurgery followed by the application of topical silicone gel sheeting was useful in the treatment of refractory keloids, according to study findings.

Researchers retrospectively analyzed 21 patients with 32 keloids; 25 lesions were treated with intralesional cryotherapy and postoperative silicone gel sheeting, and seven lesions were treated with intralesional cryotherapy alone. The researchers assessed scar volume reduction, and the patients’ subjective and objective parameters were evaluated.

A significant reduction in keloid volume was observed in both treatment groups, and significant improvements in patients’ subjective and objective complaints were also noted, according to the researchers.

Combination therapy produced slightly better results with regard to hardness, pain and discomfort, whereas monotherapy produced higher satisfaction scores in terms of redness and pruritus. However, the between group differences for these measures were not significant, according to the researchers.
