During the course of 6 months, once-monthly triple antibiotic treatment helped improve, but did not clear, granuloma annulare, according to study findings.

Researchers enrolled 21 patients with at least five granuloma annulare lesions in an open-label, prospective study. All patients received oral rifampin 600 mg, ofloxacin 400 mg and minocycline 100 mg monthly for 6 months. The researchers measured improvement using the novel objective Granuloma Annulare Severity Index (GASI) scoring system.

Study results showed 10 patients had a 50% reduction in lesions, three had a 75% improvement and one patient’s skin cleared completely. Conversely, six patients had no observed change, or their condition worsened, according to the researchers.

There was a statistically significant decrease in median GASI of 15 points from the study start to finish, although the clinical significance of this was not clear, according to the researchers.

The researchers concluded that, due to the small nature of the study and lack of a control group, they could not confirm whether the improvements seen were due to treatment, or a result of the disease’s natural course.
