Syneron launches new 5-mm spot size onychomycosis treatment

Syneron Medical has announced the market launch of its 5-mm spot size handpiece for the Gentle Pro Nd:YAG Laser Series.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration-cleared handpiece with 5-mm spot size expands the functionality of the GentleYAG Pro and GentleMax Pro Nd:YAG lasers to include treatment of onychomycosis, in addition to its existing uses for hair removal and the treatment of vascular and pigmented lesions, according to a company press release.

With the 5-mm handpiece, the laser is capable of raising the temperature beneath the nail to a level that inhibits the growth of fungus, giving the appearance of clear nails.

The laser allows physicians to treat onychomycosis symptoms locally without the possible systemic effects of oral medications, according to the release.
