Celiac disease not associated with increased malignant melanoma risk
No association was found between celiac disease and the subsequent diagnosis of cutaneous malignant melanoma, according to study results.
In a population-based study, researchers queried 28 Swedish pathology departments to identify patients with celiac disease. Patients were then matched with up to five controls based on age, gender, calendar period and region. The researchers used Cox proportional hazards to test for any association between celiac disease and subsequent cutaneous malignant melanoma diagnosis.
Seventy-eight patients among the 29,028 patients with celiac disease studied went on to develop cutaneous malignant melanoma; however, there was no significant association between celiac disease and subsequent cutaneous malignant melanoma diagnosis when compared with matched controls, according to the researchers.
The lack of association between celiac disease and subsequent cutaneous malignant melanoma remained stable over time, and findings were similar between men and women.
