In a 24-week, evaluator-blinded clinical study, researchers found that dextran-derived injectable filler provided favorable results in the augmentation of the nasolabial folds.

Researchers enrolled 20 patients with nasolabial folds rated as 3 or higher based on the Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS). Each patient received one session of dextran filler in both nasolabial folds, with no additional touch-up visit. Follow-up visits occurred at 4, 12 and 24 weeks after initial treatment.

At week 24, WSRS score had improved by two grades in 50% of patients, and by one grade in the other 50%, according to the researchers. Mean WSRS score improvements from baseline were 2, 1.75 and 1.50 at 4, 12 and 24 weeks, respectively.

One mild treatment-related adverse event was reported during the 24 weeks of follow-up.

The researchers suggested that dextran fillers may have longer staying power when compared with hyaluronic acid fillers and may be a more favorable choice.
