Repeated botulinum toxin A injections significantly increased duration of efficacy for the treatment of primary palmar hyperhidrosis, researchers found.

A retrospective analysis included 28 patients with palmar hyperhidrosis treated with a 250 U injection of botulinum toxin A (Botox, Allergan) in each palm. All participants had a Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) score of more than 2/4. Patients’ ages ranged from 17 to 73 years.

The researchers compared efficacy duration of the first and last injections received. Follow-up injections were given at the patients’ request. Mean duration of follow-up was 3.92 years.

Median duration of efficacy was 7 months for the first injection and 9.5 months for the last injection, which was statistically significant, according to the researchers (P = .0002). Twenty-four patients (86%) had two to five sessions, two patients had six sessions, one patient had eight sessions and one patient had 11 sessions.
