Cosmetic skin condition treatments involving lasers, light and energy increased nearly 34% between 2012 and 2013, according to results of an American Society for Dermatologic Surgery survey of its members.

“Not only have treatments become more effective, but they also have become safer, so patients typically are experiencing less downtime,” George Hruza, MD, ASDS president-elect, said in a press release.

There were 2.25 million laser, light and energy cosmetic skin treatments by ASDS members in 2013, compared with 1.68 million treatments in 2012, according to the ASDS Survey on Dermatologic Procedures. Treatments for facial redness resulting from rosacea and other causes were the most common procedure (454,000) conducted in 2013.

Procedures that saw an increase of at least 50% during the period included birthmark removal (90%), laser facial resurfacing (85%), surgical and traumatic-injury scar treatment and removal (79%), tissue tightening (75%) and tattoo removal (52%).

New technology, including fractionated lasers and microfocused ultrasound, and protocols are increasing procedure efficacy, Hruza said.

“Lasers are safer than ever,” Hruza said in the release. “But they’re safer in the right hands. Treatment techniques, devices and settings vary widely.”
