MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A combination dose of adapalene and benzoyl peroxide gel was an effective and well-tolerated treatment for children aged 9 to 11 years with acne, according to research presented at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting.

Lawrence F. Eichenfield, MD,FAAD, chief of pediatric and adolescent dermatology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, and colleagues conducted a multicenter, randomized, double blind study of a combination dose of 0.1% adapalene and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide (A-BPO) to treat preadolescent children’s acne.

“Acne vulgaris is commonly observed in preadolescent children,” the researchers said. “However, most topical therapies are indicated for patients aged 12 and older.”

Patients with an investigator’s global assessment score of 3 (moderate) and 20 to 100 total lesions were randomly assigned to receive A-BPO or vehicle for 12 weeks. Achieving a score of clear or almost clear with at least two grades of improvement from baseline defined treatment success.

At the end of treatment, 49.3% of patients treated with A-BPO and 15.9% of the vehicle-treated cohort achieved success (P<.001). The A-BPO group had a median percentage reduction in total lesion count of 68.6%, compared with 19.3% in the vehicle cohort (P<.001).

More than 2% of patients receiving A-BPO experienced adverse events including erythema, dry skin, skin discomfort, skin irritation and skin burning sensation. None was considered serious.
