ATLANTA — The sixth annual Iron Surgeon competition at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery's annual meeting pitted two surgeons against each other to provide to the audience their preferred treatment option for a case while simultaneously trying to entertain them.
In the first match-up, John G. Albertini, MD, faced Christopher J. Miller, MD, who both trained at Geisinger Medical Center, presented treatment options for a nasal alar defect. Albertini won this match.
In the second match-up, Jeremy S. Bordeaux, MD, faced his training director and mentor Mary E. Maloney, MD, to present a treatment option for an upper lip defect. Maloney won this match.
In the final match-up, Michael H. Gold, MD, faced Neil S. Sadick, MD, to present a skin rejuvenation plan for a patient who had severe acne scars. Sadick won this match.
The audience selected winners based upon the established criteria: choice for treatment of the cosmetic problem; the speaker’s own case examples closely matching the supplied case; the presented procedure gave excellent results; and the overall quality of the presentation. The competitors received the case 2 months earlier.
Moderated colorfully by Andrew J. Kaufman, MD, as the “Surgeon General,” and Thomas E. Rohrer, MD, the Iron Surgeon competition has emerged as an ASDS marquee event as evidenced by the large audience here.
