VIDEO: Scientific statement addresses ‘paradigm shift’ in sports cardiology practice
In this Healio video exclusive, Jonathan H. Kim, MD, provides an overview of the recently published scientific statement on clinical considerations for participation of athletes with heart disease in competitive sports.
The document, which was published in Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, provides guidance for sports classification, preparticipation screening, ethics of sports eligibility and considerations for a variety for cardiac abnormalities.
Kim, who is director of sports cardiology and associate professor of medicine in the division of cardiology at Emory University and chair of the guideline writing group, discussed why the document was needed and the importance of the recent “paradigm shift” of shared decision-making and patient involvement in deciding whether to return to play after a CVD diagnosis.
As Healio previously reported, the document also includes sports participation guidance for unique groups such as masters athletes, individuals competing at high altitudes, athletes who scuba and athletes who desire to compete while pregnant.
