The Heart Failure Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting scheduled to take place Sept. 27 to 30 in Atlanta has been canceled following declaration of a State of Emergency by the governor of Georgia due to Hurricane Helene.
The HFSA Board of Directors held an emergency meeting on Sept. 25 to discuss the hurricane’s impact on the meeting prior to making the decision to cancel both the HFSA Annual Scientific Meeting and HFSA Devices in Heart Failure meeting, according to an announcement from the society.
The HFSA board of directors stated that late-breaking clinical research sessions will be livestreamed on Sunday, Sept. 29, and Monday, Sept. 30 at 9:00 a.m. ET and will be made available on-demand to registered attendees after the sessions. They also stated they are seeking alternative formats for other education programs from the meeting to be presented at a later date.
“The Program Committee received so much incredible and cutting-edge late breaking research this year, and we know that our registrants are eager to hear these trial results and research updates. We want to bring you those results without further delay,” Mitchell Psotka, MD, PhD, chief of heart failure and transplant at Inova Health System and the 2024 ASM program committee chair, said in the statement. “We want to honor our commitment to the investigators and give them a platform through which they can share their research. This new format will present a different experience; but the most important thing is the science, and we’re excited to share that with you as scheduled.”
Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp issued the state of emergency and the Georgia State Operations Center elevated to a full-scale activation level at 7 a.m. on Sept. 25, according to a state press release.
As of 4 a.m. ET, the National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center report Hurricane Helene continues to move inland over central Georgia, with heavy rainfall and wind gusts of 77 mph.
