Key takeaways:

  • Researchers have learned that targeting inflammation can improve heart-related outcomes for certain patients.
  • Inflammation is becoming a bigger part of cardiovascular prevention and treatment strategies.

In this Healio video exclusive, Michael S. Garshick, MD, MS, discusses the role of inflammation in heart disease and how it has become a treatment target.

Garshick, a cardiologist and director of the Cardio-Rheumatology Program at NYU Langone Health and assistant professor of medicine and dermatology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, gave a presentation on the fundamentals of inflammation and its CV implications at the National Lipid Association Scientific Sessions.

“What’s exciting about this topic is that inflammation is coming to the forefront of our medical care,” Garshick said. “Over the past 10 years or so, we have found that we can now target inflammation to reduce cardiovascular events.”
