Key takeaways:

  • People with psoriasis have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease and mortality.
  • A multidisciplinary approach is key when considering the link between psoriasis and heart disease.

In this Healio video exclusive, Joel M. Gelfand, MD, MSCE, discusses the connection between psoriasis and cardiovascular outcomes.

“What is a dermatologist doing at the National Lipid Association? I’ve spent my career trying to understand how psoriasis promotes cardiovascular risk. And it is quite a relevant topic for those who are interested in dyslipidemia and cardiovascular prevention,” said Gelfand, who is the James J. Leyden Professor of Clinical Investigation and professor of dermatology and epidemiology at University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, as well as the Healio Dermatology Chief Medical Editor.

During his presentation at the NLA Scientific Sessions, Gelfand highlighted how inflammation of skin can result in cardiometabolic disease, recent research, the impact of inflammatory treatments, guidelines of care and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach.
