ATLANTA — In this Healio video exclusive, Sanjay Rajagopalan, MD, discusses a new American Heart Association policy statement that highlights the importance of considering cardiometabolic health in urban planning.

To improve global health, urban planning should address seven key physical provisioning systems that support people living in cities, with an emphasis on access to green spaces, healthy foods and safe drinking water, Rajagopalan, chief of the division of cardiovascular medicine and chief academic and scientific officer of University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute and Herman K. Hellerstein, MD, Chair in Cardiovascular Research at Case Western Reserve University, said during the ACC 2024 Scientific Session.

“This was a very important statement to bring together policy objectives that could change the trajectory of cardiometabolic disease in the United States and globally,” Rajagopalan said. “We know urban environments contribute a great deal to disproportionate outcomes in cardiometabolic disease. In fact, the environment often determines the outcomes in cardiometabolic disease very powerfully.”
