Key takeaways:

  • Diagnosis of diabetes is heterogeneous and some patients do not fit into obvious categories.
  • Individualized assessment is key for diagnosing and treating diabetes.

BOSTON — In this Healio video exclusive, Anne L. Peters, MD, delineates how the diagnosis of diabetes is heterogeneous and requires clinicians to “individualize our assessment of patients, and therefore our treatment of patients.”

Peters, professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California (USC), director of USC Clinical Diabetes Programs and a member of the Healio | Endocrine Today Editorial Board, presented on the topic at the Cardiometabolic Health Congress.

“What I try to do ... is to assess where a patient is at the moment, then try to figure out a treatment that works for them that is safe, effective and hopefully simple ... and then change therapy over time as ... their bodies tell us what they need,” Peters said.
