Key takeaways:

  • Among weight-loss therapies, bariatric surgery has the most robust long-term data.
  • However, newer weight-loss medications have encouraging data and a head-to-head trial with surgery has not yet occurred.

BOSTON — In this Healio video exclusive, Donna H. Ryan, MD, and Christopher Still, DO, FACP, discuss the optimal treatment strategy for patients who require weight loss beyond diet and lifestyle changes.

This was the topic of a debate at the Cardiometabolic Health Congress.

Ryan, professor emerita at Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University, argued in favor of drugs for weight loss, and Still, medical director for the Center for Nutrition and Weight Management and director of the Geisinger Obesity Research Institute at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, argued in favor of surgery.

“We have the most robust long-term data” for weight loss with bariatric surgery, Still said, “but we’ve never had these types of [anti-obesity] medications. It’s a great time to be at [CMHC] to talk about obesity and all of its comorbid medical problems.”
