Key takeaways:

  • Treatment options for women with obesity include lifestyle measures, medical therapy and surgery.
  • Because obesity has many different causes, treatment should be personalized in a non-stigmatizing way.

DANA POINT, Calif. — In this Healio video exclusive, Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPA, MPH, MBA, discusses considerations clinicians must make regarding women with obesity.

Cody Stanford, obesity medicine physician/scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, presented on the topic at the Cardiometabolic Health Congress (CMHC) Women’s Cardiometabolic Health and Wellness Masterclass.

“It’s important for us to realize that there are a variety of treatments that can be utilized as we address this chronic, relapsing, remitting disease of obesity,” including lifestyle measures, medical therapy and bariatric surgery, “but we must personalize the treatment to the person in front of us, and recognize that there are so many factors that can contribute to a person having this disease ... and we must address this in a non-stigmatizing way.”
