“CVD is still the leading cause of death for women and women do have unique cardiometabolic needs throughout their lifespan. Sex and gender influence everything about biology and how women interact with the health care system,” Erin D. Michos, MD, MHS, the Women’s Cardiometabolic Health and Wellness Masterclass co-chair and associate professor of medicine and director of Women's Cardiovascular Health at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, told Healio. “We take a life-course approach, from the reproductive years, looking at polycystic ovary syndrome, pregnancy, infertility, to menopause and beyond. This is a course about how to optimize cardiometabolic health for women and for clinicians to better understand these unique differences in women.”

Pam R. Taub

Led by Michos and co-chair Pam R. Taub, MD, the retreat-style course is designed to address the challenges in optimizing cardiometabolic health in women, focusing on significant sex differences in risk factors, symptom presentation, preventive strategies and treatments, as well as important implications for patient care. Sessions offer deep dives into a wide range of topics, including the menopause transition and cardiometabolic considerations, infertility and assisted reproduction technology and the intersection with cardiometabolic health, long-term obesity management in women, resistant hypertension in women and the role of testosterone in cardiometabolic health, among other hot topics.

New at the 2023 masterclass will be discussions on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in women, managing type 2 diabetes in the era of cardiometabolic outcomes trials, women and chronic kidney disease, and sessions on how to best optimize lifestyle in women, Michos said.

“We did take feedback from last year and added some new sessions and new speakers,” Michos said during an interview. “For people who attended last year, there is new content to keep it fresh.”

The masterclass also includes daily wellness events, such as sunrise yoga at Lantern Bay Park, afternoon Zumba, a refresh and recharge session in the exhibit hall with fruit smoothies and healthy snacks, and a 5K run and walk around the Laguna Cliffs resort.

“Education is a big part of our mission, but we also wanted attendees to have events for professional growth and development, as well as wellness,” Michos said. “We put ‘wellness’ in the title. We have panel discussions and sessions on topics such as overcoming adversity and other professional challenges. We built in many networking events, especially for trainees and junior faculty to spend one-on-one time connecting with experts in the field.”

The masterclass agenda also includes several panel discussions with audience Q&A sessions on topics such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and hormones, women-specific cardiometabolic risks and implications for care, and a focus on CVD, CKD and type 2 diabetes in women.

“We hope everyone can recharge, learn and engage with each other,” Michos said. “This is a special meeting. We designed the meeting that we would want to attend, with everything from the content we care about as well as professional development activities and wellness.”

Though the conference is focused on women’s health, it is open to everyone, Michos said.

“Often when we have a women’s health conference, only women clinicians attend,” Michos said. “Women make up half the population. Male clinicians also need to know how to best care for female patients. This conference is for everyone. After honoring female luminaries last year, we will also be honoring some male luminaries in the field who have championed  women in the cardiometabolic space.”
