“Parents of sick children face many difficult challenges, including how to identify the best children’s hospital to treat their illness or condition," Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in a press release. “The rankings, which are increasingly determined by objective measures of hospital quality, can help them make informed decisions.”

For the 2023-2024 rankings, U.S. News, together with RTI International, a North Carolina-based research and consulting firm, collected and analyzed data from 119 children’s hospitals and surveyed thousands of pediatric specialists. Children’s hospitals awarded a “Best” designation excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, compliance with established best practices, and level and quality of hospital resources directly related to patient care.

The rankings highlight the top 50 centers in each of these 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology. For the third year, the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings feature expanded offerings that include state rankings and multistate regional rankings.

In an interview with Healio in 2022, Daniel J. Penny, MD, PhD, chief of pediatric cardiology at Texas Children’s Hospital, noted that the hospital’s multidisciplinary team was now unified under the Texas Children’s Heart Center, improving patient care.

“It’s a true, single-focused heart center with hundreds of people, working hard to make sure we are all focused on the same goal, which is doing a better job at looking out for children and their families,” Penny told Healio.
