Key takeaways:
- CMS currently uses statin prescription as the main quality metric for cholesterol control.
- The NLA believes this is inadequate and that LDL level should be the chief quality metric.
In this Healio | Cardiology Today video exclusive, Daniel Soffer, MD, FNLA, discussed some of the highlights so far from the National Lipid Association Scientific Sessions.
Soffer, who is clinical associate professor of medicine in the division of general internal medicine and translational medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania and became president of the NLA during the meeting, said highlights included talks on plaque biology and thrombotic complications and future treatments of inflammation.
In Soffer’s own address, he said a priority for the NLA is “focusing on LDL-C as a CMS quality metric. Currently, CMS uses statin prescription as the quality metric of choice in our space, and we think that is woefully inadequate in terms of managing care for patients at the population level.
“It’s so great to be in-person again,” Soffer said. “Virtual is good, but live is better … and I’m looking forward to the rest of the meeting with my colleagues.”
