CHICAGO — In this Healio video exclusive, Erin D. Michos, MD, MHS, FACC, FAHA, FASE, FASPC, discusses the results of the SPORT late-breaking clinical trial presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.

Michos, who is associate professor of medicine and director of women’s cardiovascular health at Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and a Cardiology Today Editorial Board Member, is a co-investigator on the SPORT study.

For the SPORT study, participants were randomly assigned to 5 mg daily of rosuvastatin, placebo or one of six dietary supplements: fish oil (Nature Made), cinnamon (Nutriflair), garlic (Garlique), turmeric (Bioschwartz), plant sterols (Nature Made CholestOff Plus) or red yeast rice (Arazo Nutrition).

“The key message is that none of the six supplements did any better than placebo,” Michos said.
