The Cardiometabolic Health Congress’ Women’s Cardiometabolic Health and Wellness Masterclass will be held Sep. 9 to 11 in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

The first-of-its-kind masterclass was developed to address challenges in optimizing cardiometabolic health in women across the lifespan.

Pam R. Taub
Erin D. Michos

Led by co-chairs Pam R. Taub, MD, and Erin D. Michos, MD, MHS, the retreat-style course, held at the Terranea Resort, will feature engaging presentations, clinical insights from experts, networking opportunities and wellness activities for attendees.

“Women have unique risk factors that men do not experience that elevate their cardiovascular risks, related to menarche, polycystic ovary syndrome, pregnancy and menopause. All of this impacts their cardiometabolic health,” Michos, director of women’s cardiovascular health and associate director of preventive cardiology with the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, told Healio. “We wanted to create a program focused on women’s health across the lifespan, but also the mind-body-heart connection, wellness, and professional and personal growth for attendees.”

Sessions will explore topics including CV and cardiometabolic complications associated with pregnancy; treatment of menopausal symptoms and CV risk considerations; contraception; long-term cardiometabolic risk in women with polycystic ovary syndrome; arrhythmias in women; ethnic and racial disparities in women’s cardiometabolic health; and more.

The agenda also features two panel discussions with renowned experts in cardiometabolic care. Taub, Michos and other panelists including Martha Gulati, MD, Roxana Mehran, MD, and C. Noel Bairey Merz, MD, will highlight resilience and insights on overcoming professional and personal challenges. Another panel discussion will focus on increasing the representation of women in clinical trial leadership, with panelists including Mehran, Mohamed A. Eid, MD, MPH, MHA, JoAnne Foody, MD, and others.

“We wanted a conference that’s different from other conferences. So, we thought outside of the box to infuse different activities that you don’t typically experience at other conferences,” Taub, founder and director of Step Family Cardiac Wellness and Rehabilitation Center and professor of medicine at UC San Diego Health, told Healio.

This includes opportunities to relax and recharge, like a “brain break” with Sunny Smith, MD, founder and CEO of Empowering Women Physicians; Zumba co-led by Christie M. Ballantyne, MD; sunrise fitness on the lawn; a coaching session aimed at cultivating calm amidst the chaos with Ramona Master, MD; a choose-your-own pace 5K walk/jog; and more.

“There will be incredible content from a cardiometabolic health perspective, but also how to take better care of ourselves,” Taub said. “One thing that has happened during the pandemic is that there is an incredible amount of burnout among clinical providers. It’s important to infuse wellness into a conference like this for our own health because we can’t take care of our patients if we’re not taking care of ourselves.”

The first-of-its-kind masterclass is limited to 200 seats to facilitate an intimate and relaxing environment. The course is targeted for the wide range of health care professionals involved in the care of women, from cardiologists, primary care physicians and endocrinologists to advanced practitioners, OB-GYNs and others.

“Our goal is for attendees to be able to better take care of women patients and understand the unique risks that women patients face throughout the lifespan. We also hope attendees take away tips to help their own personal and professional growth, to learn how to improve upon ourselves as well as improve upon our care of the patients we serve,” Michos said.
