Gulati: ASPC congress to focus on, expand the ABCs of CVD prevention
The American Society for Preventive Cardiology Congress on CVD Prevention will be held Friday through Sunday and focus on the expansion of the ABCs of prevention and the future of preventive CV care.
The Congress will run July 29 to 31 in Louisville, Kentucky, and covers the “ABCs of Preventive Cardiology” over the 2.5-day in-person program.
Healio spoke with Martha Gulati, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA, FASPC, associate director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center, director of preventive cardiology at Cedars-Sinai and president-elect of the ASPC, about some of the topics in the spotlight this year and what attendees can hope to garner from the sessions.
‘ASPC has grown remarkably’
“After 3 years, we are finally meeting in person. We have more attendees than we have ever had at a meeting and our CV prevention community at ASPC has grown remarkably in the past 2 years, reflecting the push of CVD prevention to the forefront,” Gulati told Healio. “Not just because we have exciting novel therapies but because COVID-19 has taught us just how important CVD prevention should be within our medical community. Addressing all aspects of prevention through the ABCs will help equip the practicing preventive cardiologists and other health professionals in the CVD prevention space with the most up-to-date tools for their patients.”
The theme of the 2022 ASPC Congress is the ABCs preventive cardiology. Roger S. Blumenthal, MD, director of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Cardiology Today Prevention Section Editor, will present “ABCDEs of Preventive Cardiology” on Saturday.
“Dr. Blumenthal, who was the co-chair of the American Heart Association Prevention guidelines, has always talked about the ABCs of prevention to make it easy to remember,” Gulati told Healio. “But as Blumenthal says, the lists of what that means gets bigger ... and will kick this theme off, but we will be talking not just about CAD, but the links between kidneys and heart function and between liver disease and the heart as well.”
Anticipated presentations
On Friday, Pamela S. Douglas, MD, MACC, FASPC, the Ursula Geller Professor of Research in Cardiovascular Diseases in the department of medicine at Duke University, is being honored as the 2022 recipient of the Honorary Fellow of the ASPC Award and will present the keynote speech, “Strengthening CV Prevention for the Future: Beyond the ABCs.”
“Douglas has been such a visionary in cardiology and has led some of the most important trials relating how cardiac imaging can be used to evaluate chest pain,” Gulati told Healio. “Douglas is being given an honorary fellowship within the ASPC and her talk will be of great importance to the preventive cardiology community.”
On Saturday, the congress will host a debate between Ann Marie Navar, MD, PhD, FASPC, associate professor of medicine and population and data sciences at UTSouthwestern Medical Center, and Michael Blaha, MD, MPH, FASPC, professor of cardiology and epidemiology and director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, on the topic of “Does Aspirin Have a Role in Primary Prevention, Regardless of Dose, Bleeding Risk, or CAC?”

Can We ACHIEVE GREATER Blood Pressure Control? A Novel Model for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, presented by Phillip Levy, MD, MPH, the Edward S. Thomas Endowed Professor in the department of emergency medicine and associate vice president for translational science in the Office of the Vice President for Research at Wayne State University;
Open Artery Ischemia: An unrecognized opportunity for prevention, presented by Cardiology Today Chief Medical Editor Carl J. Pepine, MD, MACC, emeritus professor of medicine at the University of Florida; and
Primordial Prevention – Aging Begins at Conception, presented by Elaine Urbina, MD, MS, director of preventive cardiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
“These are exciting times in cardiac disease prevention, and I don't think there will be anything in this program that isn't exciting,” Gulati told Healio. “We have the world’s experts with us for this fantastic — and finally in person — meeting.”
