Michael Bowdish appointed vice chair of cardiac surgery at Smidt Heart Institute

Michael Bowdish, MD, MS, has been appointed vice chair of the department of cardiac surgery at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, according to a press release.
Bowdish will lead the department of cardiac surgery alongside Joanna Chikwe, MD, the Irina and George Schaeffer Distinguished Chair in Cardiac Surgery at the Smidt Heart Institute.
“Michael Bowdish is uniquely placed to catalyze the remarkable clinical and academic growth we are seeing in cardiac surgery at Cedars-Sinai,” Chikwe said in the release. “His deep expertise in clinical research, quality and programmatic development is already propelling this exceptional team to new heights.”
Bowdish was previously at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC); serves on the steering committee of the NHLBI-sponsored Cardiothoracic Surgical Trials Network; is chair of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database Task Force; and received the Richard J. Hurvitz Teaching Award from USC in 2021.
“I’m thrilled to join this truly world-class team,” Bowdish said in the release. “Cedars-Sinai is leading the important conversations in our specialty right now, pushing the envelope in heart and lung transplantation, structural heart, robotic surgery, pivotal trials and ground-breaking translational research.”
Bowdish was educated at Washington University in St. Louis, and was awarded the Harvey Butcher Prize in Surgery. Bowdish’s general surgery residency was completed at USC, and later completed cardiothoracic surgery fellowship training at Columbia Presbyterian in New York, before returning to USC from 2010 until May 2022.
