Cleveland Clinic ranked No. 1 US hospital for cardiology, heart surgery

Cleveland Clinic has been ranked as the No. 1 U.S. hospital for cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report, according to its 2020-2021 Best Hospitals rankings.
“It’s a tremendous honor to again receive this award. It’s something that we don’t take lightly and it’s part of our mantra to take great care of our patients with high-quality outcomes and maximum safety,” Lars Svensson, MD, PhD, chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute, told Healio. “We spend a lot of time doing research and looking at ways to improve care not only with new devices or new procedures, but also the whole process of taking great care of patients. To receive this recognition again is just wonderful. It’s not something that just happens. This is a concerted effort by many people before us and continuing on this journey of high quality care, superb excellence and delivery of that to our patients.”
The top five U.S. hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery according to the 2020-2021 Best Hospitals rankings are:
- Cleveland Clinic;
- Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota;
- Cedars-Sinai;
- NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell; and
- Massachusetts General Hospital.
“It’s something that is part of our DNA and everything we do. Teams working very closely together and delivering care to our patients, backed up by strong research is one of the reasons why we have been able to deliver such great care,” Svensson said in an interview. “We also see a huge number of patients, and if you manage a lot of patients, you get better. You also see the rarer things and you streamline how to manage patients. We do about 4,500 heart operations here in our area. Last year, we did 696 transcatheter aortic valve replacements, a huge number of electrophysiology procedures and just over 2,000 lung operations and vascular surgery procedures. Doing a lot of procedures and concentrating on quality it pays off in time.”
Additionally, Mayo Clinic was ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News & World Report 2020-2021 Best Hospitals Honor Roll, Cleveland Clinic was ranked No. 2, Johns Hopkins Hospital was ranked No. 3, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell and UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles were tied for No. 4.
“Our CEO, Tomislav Mihaljevic, as a priority, focused on high-quality care by all institutes and asked all of the institute chairs to focus on that safety,” Svensson told Healio. “Safety is monitored on a weekly basis and at the same time worked on high-quality outcomes for patients. Most of the institutes have improved their standings in the last year. In the aggregate, we are very fortunate that U.S. News & World Report now ranks us No. 2 as a hospital.”
According to U.S. News & World Report, the hospital data were obtained before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and for future reports, modifications to the ranking methodology may be made to account for the impact on the pandemic on hospital measures.
